This Week's Cravings: Kid Friendly

Kid Friendly has taken a new meaning in my home. Kid friendly corners, kid friendly floors, electronics, toys, towels, chemicals.... food though? Not just yet - unless you count my baby food making adventures.

Today's recipe is kid friendly but it's not a way to hide veggies. It's not full of vitamins and nutrients. It makes eating cookies more fun.

I shared this concept recently on Frosting for the Cause (a wonderful site, I encourage you to join in!) and it is perfectly suitable for children.

Painted Sugar Cookies

  • Sugar Cookie dough

  • Egg yolks

  • Food coloring

  • Paint brushes

  1. Roll and cut sugar cookie dough into desired shapes. Make thicker than usual so they are plenty sturdy for young creativity. Place on baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Freeze for at least 5 minutes.

  2. While freezing.... divide yolks into several small bowls. Add a couple drops water, then dye desired color. This is a great learning opportunity about primary colors and making new colors. Especially since the yellow yolks affect the final colors.

  3. Provide food safe paint brushes and have fun! It's very similar to water colors. Once the art is complete bake as the dough directs. The colors is darken while baking.

  4. Let cool on a wire rack and admire your masterpieces!

These are such great ideas -- and those cookies look like kids would have a blast making!

I linked up a sandwich -- a fun, kid-sized way to have them eat more veggies :)
