This Week's Cravings - PIZZA!

Happy Monday - who has snow? :)

Today we are celebrating National Pizza Week - yes a whole week dedicated to the deliciousness we know as pizza. Yum!

I'm sharing a couple items - a great pizza dough recipe a dear friend gave me years ago, and how to grill pizza. Whether making fresh or reheating pizza, grilling is a great way to go - it keeps your dough nice and crispy!

It's pizza time!

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 2 pkgs instant yeast
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 tb sugar
  1. Pour yeast into a medium bowl. Add warm water - set aside for 2-3 minutes. It will get a little foamy - this is a sign of good yeast!

  2. Combine flour and sugar in a large bowl. Pour yeast-water into flour and mix with a wooden spoon until the dough begins to clump. Work dough with your hands to form a ball.

  3. On a lightly floured surface, knead dough 3-4 minutes until smooth and elastic. Form into a ball.

  4. Place ball in a greased bowl; cover with a thin dish towel and place somewhere warm. {On top of the oven or inside the microwave are good places.} Allow dough to double in size - approx 10-15 minutes depending on temperature.

  5. Remove from bowl to a lightly floured surface. Punch down and roll to desired size. We divided the dough into 2 portions but it can easily make individual pizzas for 4-6 people.

  6. Prepare baking sheet or baking stone by spraying lightly with non-stick spray then sprinkling with cornmeal.

  7. Bake at 350 for approx 10 minutes. This makes the dough 'set' and is easier to transport onto the grill.
- After baking, you can garnish and serve immediately. Or, you can wrap pizzas in saran wrap and aluminium foil then freeze. Freezer pizza is great to have on hand - thaw, top with leftovers and grill for a fast and inexpensive meal!


Pick your favorites! We used:

  • fresh tomato
  • bell pepper
  • ricotta cheese
  • mushrooms
  • spinach
  • caramelized onions
  • Spicy Spaghetti Sauce
  • mozzarella cheese

{Optional: Brush dough with melted butter or olive oil. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese and italian seasoning. This gives the crust so much flavor!}

    1. Get your grill going - we have a standard propane grill, it was set to medium-high heat.

    2. Put dough on a baking sheet for easier transport. Add your toppings, here's mine pre-cheese:

    3. Carefully slide onto your grill. Cook for 5-8 minutes, until crust is desired crunchiness. I like it a little crunchy, hubby likes really really crunchy crust.

    4. Remove from grill using a metal spatula to help slide the pizza back onto your baking sheet.

  • Hubby - see how he sprinkled italian seasonings on top of the cheese? It's so yummy!
